Obesity & Weight Loss
Overweight and Obesity
Overweight and obesity are caused by an increase the in number and size of fat cells in the body. This complex disease can be attributed to a combination of factors, including genetics, environment, and eating and exercise behaviors. In adults, obesity is defined by Body Max Index (BMI) of 30 or above, and is associated with a large number of medical conditions including diabetes, heart disease, metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, cancers, and sleep disorders.
Although common treatments for obesity include diet and exercise programs, studies show that over time, most people will regain weight lost through diet and exercise. Due to the inability of diet and exercise programs to help many people achieve and maintain weight loss, bariatric surgeries have been developed for people with severe obesity. While these surgeries are often successful with weight loss, they are typically permanent, have lifelong side effects, and can have very serious complications, including internal bleeding, staple line failure, and death.
